Hi Everyone, I really need the generosity of chin lovers such as yourself. I have been told of a situation in OH where 11 chinchillas need to desperately be rescued. A older couple who were breeders have become ill and can no longer care for the chins they have left. The chins have suffered neglect and inhumane conditions for a while now. I have been told that a breeding collar on a female is embedded into her neck and they have chewed their way out of wooden enclosures to escape at time. It is believed a few females are pregnant and honestly, every female could be pregnant because except for two all chins are in male/female pairs. The woman never knows who is pregnant until she walks in and sees a kit there . This is a very bad situation. She does not want to breed anymore, but does want to sell her 'herd'. As much as I HATE paying anyone for neglected chins, that is the only way to save this group. I know a breeder (who also rescues) who will take all the chins. She will be driving four hours one way to get them. She will make sure they get proper medical care and will be on pregnancy watch. After a 30 day quarantine, she will be looking to adopt them out. She does screen all new potential homes for any rescues she takes in. However, we need your help to raise funds to get these chins. All of these chins are young, under 2 1/2 years old. We are told they are grey, black and beige. Any amount you can spare to help save these chins is greatly appreciated. This is NOT a donation to my rescue, however, I am collecting any funds and will then pass them along to the person who will be taking and caring for the chinchillas. Any 'donation' can be sent to my paypal account. Please make a notation that is is for the OH CHIN RESCUE. My paypal is chins@foreverfeistychinchilla.org Thank you for your consideration

Oh dear lord! What's in the air! I'm glad they're being saved, I can't donate very much at the moment due to tight finances, but I'll see what I can do.

Thank you Marne!
I'm sure everyone thinks it's strange I am asking for donations to pay a breeder, so I just want everyone to understand why. I hate giving this elderly couple one cent especially for chins that are being neglecting, however when you do rescue, on occasion, you have to go beyond your limit (or morals) to help an animal. This is one of those times. In the past I have never paid a breeder for a chin.
The husband hates these chins and just wants them gone. The wife is the main breeder and both of their health is not good. They are NOT caring for these poor chins and have no clue who is pregnant or even when a kit is born unless they happen to see one in the cage when they go down stairs. From the conversations with them it does not sound like the cages are being cleaned.
We are trying to negotiate and appeal to the husband that we can take them off his hands (so to speak) since he wants them gone.
Sometimes you have to really bite your tongue to get a chin out of a really bad situation. I'm sure all the other rescues on here can relate.

This makes me so sad and I'm honestly so sick to my stomach after reading what happened to the 3 the had to put down. I hope you can raise the money you need. I just had to take one of my rescues in for a teeth trimming and I may be making a 14-15 hour round trip to pick up 3 chins from a RR on the other rescue thread. Just when you think you've seen it all, you hear something like this. There really needs to be harsher laws for backyard breeders who do stuff like this with any animal! Thank you so much for getting all the chinchillas to a safe, wonderful place. I just pray that if any of the females are pregnant, it's not by their offspring.

Shoot, I understand. I have had to offer money on occasion. Rarely, but it has happened.

That is so generous of you Marne!! Yes, that would be wonderful!!
Right now I have to get ready because I am speaking to a 4H group tonight about chinchillas and bringing a couple of the rescues, but later I will make a new thread for the raffle.

UPDATE:
Well the person who is going to pick up these chins received word that someone wanted to buy them to continue breeding them, we decided we could not wait until all the funding came through and would go get who we could. These chins were in no condition to be bred anymore.
She picked them up yesterday (Friday). There was a total of 14 chins because there were unexpected kits just a few days old (triplets). The elderly couple DID NOT KNOW there were kits until they went in yesterday.
This is what my friend emailed me when she got home
"No lighting, unsanitary cages...mixed gender bathing in a community bath house...and they all look scrawny/inbred with really ratty faces...out of the females brought home at least two feel early pregnant"
They were kept in a basement with NO lights (total darkness) unless they flipped a switch!! Unbelievable. They all had severe fur mats, hard to tell their color because of filth, cages not cleaned in weeks if not months, pairs kept in tiny breeding run holes.
She got all but 4 males out of there. We just did not have enough money yet. We REALLY want to get the other 4 males out of these horrid conditions, so help is still needed.
I want to sincerely thank those who have contributed to help these chins so far. Anyone can contact me if you would still like to help.

Sounds like you'd have grounds for a cruelty case. Has anyone looked into this? Not much information about this couple, but I'd be worried that they might be tempted to dip into breeding again - if not chins, then something else - unless they have some consequences from their actions! No one should treat any critters this way! (Getting the local authorities involved - whether police or shelter staff or whoever's got jurisdiction there might also be a way to free the last males from this prison despite the lack of funds.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

I wonder if she is where Rhody came from. He is a pink white with red eyes and blue pupils, malo on the left side of his mouth. Sweet but scrawny little dude, and I just adore him. But when he came to us he had an inch wide green stripe going from his mouth to his tail, and his owners didn't know that was abnormal. ? UGH.
I'm glad you got most of them out, I sure hope that someone can help to get the last 4 out. It's awful they had to be left behind. I can practically feel their confusion and fear. It's too bad the man couldn't be talked into giving you the triplets and a male for free, so that you could buy the other 3 outright.

Well we were able to talk them down in price from $41.00 each chin to $30.00 each because the cages, etc. were not taken. Have no idea who would want them, they were all rusted and really gross.
Not sure how much she had to pay for the kits, but she was really worried about getting the females out first and then any males after that. She got them all settled in last night with flecce and chew sticks, which they did not know what to do with. Don't know how to take a bath yet either. Despite everything she said they are friendly.
She had a pile of fur mats by the time she brushed them last night. A couple had scarring on their necks from old collars that had been used.

Thank God they are away from those people and nightmare conditions! It makes me sick they are just out for money. These babies have suffered so much and they are so blessed now to be getting the loving care they deserve. It's a long road ahead but the healing begins now. That couple had better not ever get another chin! It should be a crime. I pray so hard that the remaining 4 males can be rescued very, very soon!

Have all the chins been rescued yet? I also agree that this sounds like a good case for animal cruelty. I would suggest looking into that and seeing what could be done. Grrrrrr this makes me so mad...
