Once again I am hoping someone can help out or knows of someone who can.
I have been contacted by a woman in North Carolina who needs to find a home for her 3 chinchillas, all males. She has fallen on hard times with the economy and has been struggling for a while with their care and has decided she needs to surrender them.
They are all from hobby breeders and she says two have pedigrees. Two are healthy, but one has malo and is struggling to maintain weight. She is hand feeding and he has had x-rays and his teeth trimmed. I'm not sure if she has him on pain meds or not.
Obviously these chins need to be taken by someone who has experience and money to be able to get the malo chin vet care and is willing to give him a special diet for his condition.
She is willing to give all her supplies including a quality cage.
She is willing to drive part way to meet someone if they can take her boys. She is just too far for me and I have several chins that I am caring for already that have malo that need regular vet care and special diets.
It really saddens me to think that a hobby breeder is selling chins with malo, but I know it happens all the time.
If another rescue or experienced chin person thinks they can care for these wonderful boys, please let me know asap.
Thank You

What about Crysta? I found 2 rescues in North Carolina. www.nc-claws.org/www.raleighrodentrescue.org/ (The site was last updated in 2009, it appears. Also, doesn't seem like they take chinnies. Mostly, hamsters, guniea pigs and rats. Not sure though!

I know of the woman who runs CLAWS, she used to be on another forum years ago. She was a breeder and had some barbaric practices that I totally disagreed with, so I would never send a chin her way. I thought she was only into wild life at this point anyway so I'm not sure why she is listed as a chin rescue.
The other rescue you listed is out of business as are a couple of others listed for NC.
I found one that is a possibility in GA, but not sure if they are willing to drive to meet this woman or how far that would be.
I wondered about my FL rescue friends, but not sure about distance for them either.
Crysta, Laura - is this just way too far for either of you, even if you meet her part way?

feistychins, I'm having my mom email you through your rescue email. (It's easier than walking her through this site..) She has a ''bffl'' friend in North Carolina and I think we could be of some help if still needed.

Mandy ~ thank you so much for helping out and it was wonderful to speak with your mom. I love to talk with people from the South.......I love the accent.
There is a good chance we may be able to work something out for two of the chinchillas.
However, I need to find someone with experience to take the chin with malo.
Is there anyone close to North Carolina willing to take him and care for him?

lol, no problem. My mom just got a hoot out of the accent thing. ;D
As far as the third one goes--What about NOLA chinchilla rescue in new orleans? That's where my parents are going (new orleans) , and also where they would be dropping off the two to the woman who wants them. (who I believe is calling you shortly, (: )

I don't really know them except by their web site and from another forum. LA is actually farther than I am and I would like to see the chin not have to travel so far especially since he is not well.
I hope to find someone closer to NC.

Just want to post a quick update.....
I have finally heard from the person who currently has these chinchillas and they are trying very hard to keep them (which I give them a lot of credit for doing that), so they are asking family to see if they can borrow money to be able to afford their care.
I told them to let me know as soon as they decide for sure what they will be doing.

Andrea, I am sorry about not answering this thread sooner. Somehow I missed it until just now. I am a good ways away, but I know someone in NC who might be willing to take them in if need be.
