Normally I don't announce when I rescue a chinchilla, but today was a little different. No matter how full my rescue is, I always take in life threatening emergencies. I had a woman contact me last August and November to see if I could take one of her chins that was not getting along with her other chins. At the time it was not an emergency and I had so many surrenders including a few that were emergencies that I could not take him back then. She contacted me two days ago asking again if I could take her chin, a 4 year old male in perfect health. She got him from a breeder and had him since he was a kit. When she got him he had been with two other males and when they started to get older and sexually mature, he started to fight with the other boys so she separated them. She said he was 'vicious' and attacked the other chins, attacked her and attacked himself! She said he bit her causing her to bleed. She had an appointment with a vet for today to have him "put down". A perfectly healthy chin.......euthanized because he was not friendly enough!! Of course I told her I would take him because I would not let that happen because he was hard to handle. I never met the woman as I got her to drop him off at my vet office since I had an appointment to go there. Besides desperately needing a dust bath, this chin is gorgeous and very sweet. I reached in the cage with no problem to pick him up, he was a little nervous, but not bad. He NEVER tried to nip me at all. After I got him settled into his temporary cage here, I let him rest. When I checked on him a little later and opened the cage door he walked onto my lap and allowed me to kiss and pet him. I have had a couple of people threaten to maybe get their chin euthanized if they could not find them a home, but never follow through and certainly not make an appointment. I know she fully planned on going through with it too. My vet gave him a full exam and he did great! He weighs over 700 grams. How on earth can someone euthanize a perfectly healthy chin!!! I just took this photo of him.

What a cutie! I'm so glad you got him in time.
I've had that with a few chins, people threatening to have them put down, or, even worse, to kill them with their bare hands. And they've meant it. I know someone who has killed other animals in their care, and so we made an extra effort to rescue some of the chins there. It's disgusting to me. No one is *that* vicious. Well, ok, Piet was. But he's not anymore. Even if they are, you just wear long sleeves and leather gloves. Sheesh.

i'd rather deal with a aggressive chin than have to try n help an aggressive dog like some we get in RSPCA that can be very scary. we also have a senegal parrot in that has not bin handled and so will not come near anyone as a result we have not bin able to find him a home yet whereas his mate that was hand tame went to a new home before christmas. its good that grumpy chinnies have a place to go thanx to u

Here's what I see in that picture an animal that has been misunderstood... a being that needs to be free for longer periods of time a chinchilla that lashes out for a REASON
there are reasons for everything though PEOPLE certainly need mental institutions I have yet to meet an animal that does
they need whoever cares for them to show them kindness and since they live in our man made prisons..cages we call homes for them, that we close for their safety , they need to get out of those "homes" and run and adventure
this chinchilla just needs a friend
that stupid person who was gonna put him down is not as foolish as one may think
that person got that chinchilla to Andrea ....THAT was the smartest thing one could do.
Andrea... I WILL SPONSOR that chinchilla email me the monthly cost and I will take care of it. Lets find a name for him... and lets give him a life!
All I ask is that I get updates, pics of him playing, and being held by you..or whatever HE WANTS.
One starfish saved is better than none.

I am so glad you were able to take him in. I can't believe that woman. It reminds of of the call I got about the woman throwing the hamsters out because they just "kept breeding". He is beautiful, and I bet his personality will shine with a bit of attention and love. Animals can tell when they aren't wanted and often act out. Now that he IS wanted I'm sure he'll be a ray of sunshine in your life. I often get rescues that are "evil", "spray everyone who comes into contact with them", "bites and draws blood" yet, when they get here they are the sweetest things ever. It makes me wonder what these people are doing to these chins, or the environment they are in to cause them to be like that.

we got a dog in and the wonman said he had bitten and by law we have to put them to sleep if they have bitten ppl so we did and she came back few weeks later and said that it was untrue and it was just an excuse so she could get rid of him. i don't think i have ever bin that angry in my life. there are some truely evil people aout there that should be banned from having pets for life. and really wot sort of example are they setting for their kids.
that chin is so lucky to have u

Well I am very happy to report that this chin is one of the sweetest I have rescued. I spent time with him after posting on here and he came right over to see me when I open the cage door and he walked onto my hand and lap. He lets me kiss him and give him chin rubs. He is a little nervous at times, but very curious. I gave him a dust bath and he was hesitant to go in at first, which tells me he did not get many before. I have NO CLUE what this woman was talking about. He is not 'vicious' or even aggressive toward me at all. The vet had no problem giving him a physical, so he was not bad with her either. The woman had him since he was a kit, so whatever happened to him, I believe was something with her care because I know the breeder she got him from (by reputation) and he has healthy chins. The person at my vets office said he was scared of her when she brought him in. She wanted to say her final goodbye to him before they took him in back, which amazed me since he would have been dead by now if I didn't take him. I was also very angered to think that a vet would have euthanized him with nothing being wrong with him. I talked to my vet and a technician and they both agreed that some vets would have done it if that is what the woman wanted. My vet will not euthanize a healthy animal just because the owner does not want them anymore. I gave him a new name last night because I think he should have a new start at life. His name is Barkley and he seems to like it. He is a white mosaic ebony according to the breeder papers she sent along with him. I really appreciate the sponsorship offer Jamie, but I really think that after he has some time to settle in and me working with him a little, that I will have no problem adopting him out to a good home.

he is the same colour as the baby one i am getting in April, Ebony mosaic or black/white cross. same thing ncan't understand y she did not just look for a new home for him there are lots of people out there looking for chins especially pedigree ones. sometimes ppl will say anything as an excuse for there actions just to make themselves feel better n its just wrong it should be a punishable offense to put down a healthy animal as it is in effect murder. if u killed it yourself that would be cruelty but taking it to a vet to do it is somehow better, i don't think so

Argh! There is SO MUCH in my head, when I read this. All this questions about WHAT THE HELL is going on in those people? Who could ever want to KILL a pet they even had as BABY!! God, I got 3 of my boys as Baby and it would kill ME, to just think about I could be responsible for their death, when I hold them as little souls in my hands and promised them to love and protect them forever in this world! Darn, when I took my Babies out of the rescue, if as baby or older, I even promised Robby's DAD and Pico's MOM who were there with their brothers, that I will care good for their Babies!! Some humans ... I have no words for this!! But I must say, I am GLAD, really glad Andrea, that you already answered another question of mine - that there are thank god also vets who would refuse to kill a healthy animal! What I see there in this picture is exactly, for what Jamie found so nice words!! A wonderful, handsome, curious Chin who needs some care and MUCH love! I know I would take and love him, if I would be just nearer. Well, maybe ... Jamie, do you remember, that it often started like that, that you offered to sponsor a Chin and then bit later he came to your home?! ;D Look into his eyes .... Well, for now I am just glad he is with YOU Andrea! I have no doubts he is the Sweetest in just a good home! Keep us updated about Barkley please! Hugs Ilka

The story sounds of so familiar.
In high school a girl stopped me in the hall way and ask if I wanted her chinchilla. She gave me the college excuse, then changed her mind later. (that was in Nov/Dec 08) Then in Feb 08 she had a mutual friend call me and ask if I would come pick him up that night. She said the sooner the better, she didn't want him anymore. Told me to meet her at the school at 6:45. That gave me like an 1hr to get ready and get over there. The friend I was on the phone with told me she no longer wanted him because she was extremely afraid of him and she had to give him a bath and playtime tonight and was afraid to get him out. He was biting her a lot and breaking the skin. She was wearing leather gloves and he was biting her through those. I meet her, she reached me him in his "cage" (grr at that) and a bag full of his stuff. Told me good luck with him...he bites really hard and he's a terror. I told her okay and I'd work with him to get him out of that. She said good luck with that and told me she had to go. So we left. We were there maybe 3 to 5 minutes. but I seriously doubt it was 5 minutes. We got back in the car and on the way home I was holding him. I keep sticking my fingers in his cage...not one time did that little "terror" bite me. Well, at the beginning of our road the Ford Explorer jumped time and stopped. We pulled over and waited for mom to bring the truck. Well, i opened his cage and daddy put his hand in there...not one time did he bite him or try to. he just rested his paws on daddies fingers. Daddy moved his hand and he came out of the cage into my arms. He sat in my lap and let us all pet him. He even crawled over into daddies lap.
MaveRick still is a sweet little guy. He has his grumpy days, of course, but what chinnie doesn't. A little girl around the road even comes to visit him every so often and he loves it. She asked about him one time which was 3 months after I got him. But I have classes with this girl as we go to the same college and she has never asked about him or even spoke to me.
Anyways...sorry to get off topic with Mave's story.
Berkley sounds like a sweet and I'm sure you'll be able to adopt him out =) and Thank you for getting "another vicious/terror" chinchilla out of the hands of the careless.

I want another chin or few, but we need the room first. Right now one littel chin fellow is enough. I'm not sure Soc would share his mommy anyways. LOL
