ha, Jamie! I take in the ones that need help. I mean, need it. There have been plenty in and out the shelter that were just fine. I've only shared the ones that have something wrong..be it medical, behavior, etc. If I had to be blunt, guessing why I'm like this would be simple. When I was younger we had either a little female dwarf rabbit named Sugar, or a female Guinea pig we called Angel. I also went through a lot emotionally back then...so if I ever needed someone to turn to (and due to my personality of being shy/reserved) my pets were always there. Growing up with that, I now feel the need to be that turn-to for the animals that need someone... that have something going on that they need help with. Just like the two 'helped' me back then. Make sense? That's the only reason I clear it in my head on why I'm so passionate about this.. lol Ps: If you ever really see anyone.. my mom loves taking trips to see new places.. I doubt she'd complain about a little drive. Mandy thats very cool I am clearly not shy, but my pets are a part of me that I think I have yearned for. Having children of my own for example. I never had children, and my friends in the music business are all about their career often. They don't want kids, pets anything that takes them from their goals...but I love getting away from my career. While Im fortunate enough to travel and adventure I find I feel more happy when I can take care of , play with , enjoy all the pets right here. I can share someone elses world without getting on an airplane Now that I have said this.. I need to clean 6 cages this is one part of sharing their world.. that I could probably do without LOL Jamie I

Do the gerbil babies are back at the shelter. The rescues/shelters are all doing an event for valentines day, and a photographer took this photo of the gerbils. It came out so cute, they made the flyer!

Mandy Ive worked with many rescues the last 10 years and its changed alot , much to the benefit of the animals but also a bit more work for the top of the line rescuers.
More and more rescuers find people who check out in terms of their potential to be great guardians. I have seen rescuers do house checks, making sure of the conditions the people live in, if there are children, animals, space, etc
Though some might think this as an invasion of privacy others like me think its a must cause someone can SAY anything, they can misrepresent easily.
For example we had a case where a guy was going all over rescuing guinea pigs and rats. He called on the phone telling the rescuer he had a ton of experience with nutrition and behavior etc..that he loved his animals
well the "love his animals" was partly true he had 3 snakes and was feeding ALL the rescues to his snakes getting animals that needed a home for pennies on the dollar
we have all heard horror stories about people adopting chinchillas , acting like they love chinnies and then taking them home to make breeders out of them, without any life and in many cases poor care.
A visit to a possible new home I believe is way better than emails and phone of course and then before they can have the animal ... ( and this is where the extra work for rescuers comes in) the RESCUE teaches the essentials... and gives all the best info in as many ways as they can
Its certainly less work to tell someone... 1. if you have any questions feel free to call me 2. I belong to this and that forum...please join so you can have references to good info
but I believe if you find someone your heart says might make a proper guardian , that little extra, that of you actually teaching whats right and proper will make the adoption process as seemless as possible.
As Lucky's birthday approaches ( it's Valentine's day) I remember years in an exercise ball, charlie chinchilla, hagen daz ice cream, nuts, JUNK, cookies and I couldnt have cared about , loved , nurtured, adored THAT animal more than I did .... yet I did all the wrong things..ALL The wrong things
if you had met me then I have to assume you would have thought I was NOT a good candidate to adopt packer or anyone else
you can be a very strong force, a teacher, a life giver , a life saver by extending your knowledge to the right people

It's normal for chubby chins to have bald spots there. It's from them running and the friction from it rubbing the floor, rubbing against the bottom of the cage, etc. When they lose weight sometimes the fur grows back, but not always.

very cool Mandy You know my C and C is a 3 by 3 and though its completely open Rex loves it and of course its built for the guinea pigs
the upper level here was never used , I saw all those beautiful 2 level GP cages , but my guys are too fat to climb I never tried it with rex and as you know he is in a crate made for giant dogs ( the original cage for Lucky)
Thats a nice piece of coroplast, never saw one that color I first used linoleum but found out how rabbits gnaw and guinea pigs too and that can be toxic to them so I went to the local sign company and got the coroplast material
they dont chew on it, the chinnies dont chew on it must taste bad or something
nice work Mandy

So, I'm really trying to figure this one out. Back in October, a dog was adopted from the shelter. Now, I loved this dog and was almost (sad) to see him go. (selfish, right? lol!) Every-time I went...I had to go see him. He knew me, and we worked on his training...brushed his (ever shedding) coat, hung out, played...it was just great. We clicked. His name is Charlie. He is a Siberian husky/Golden retriever mix. Beautiful and big boy with one blue eye and one brown. Well, today...Charlie was returned. We don't think his owners were that nice. When me and another volunteer took him into the small yard..he was whining, drooling, head was lowered....he just didn't look like Charlie. I went out and talked to him, and after a few seconds he walked to my side, sat down, and looked up at me. He seemed so..disoriented. Not even a few minutes later, he wouldn't leave my side. When the second volunteer left to get a treat and came back, he walked around and hid behind my other leg. I took him in the lobby to brush him, and he looked at me and placed his paw on my lap. Not even 5 minutes later - HE WAS CHARLIE. He was SO happy. He jumped on me and tried to lay on my lap (ok, he's a very big boy.) & he 'hugged' me. I was just so happy that he was happy too. I sat in his kennel then for the longest time and he started everything again...everything I asked for. Gave me his paw, even gave both paws at once, laid down... did everything to be loyal. He even got up from laying across my lap and went through the little door to see what was out side, then came back in and looked at me. I told him to 'resume the position' and he came and laid back across my lap. I just love this dog...usually don't get attached to them at the shelter..but this one is so special. I told my mom, and darn near begged. I have to get a job to pay for him of course, and we will see. Only problem is I can be painfully shy if it doesn't have to do with animals, but hopefully there's something out there I can jump on soon. Fingers crossed this works out. He's just amazing. (Has gained weight since the picture was taken) Such a sad story, but looks like it might have a happier ending, after all.... So happy to hear he got happy again for you..... Best of luck to you... hes a beautiful boy, I can understand how you could fall for those puppy eyes! beautiful!!

Charlie will be coming home with us on foster bases to be treated for heartworm. The fundraising has started, and my mom has pushed it to a group of around a thousand people who are already wanting to donate. It's going to take a long while as he's in bad shape, but Charlie has fight - and I'll be with him for it. where do I donate? I give you and all rescue members the permission to MENTION donating no actual soliciting cause proboards would not be pleased thanks Jamie
