Guys. I usually don't respond to craigslist ads, but this one has me down right disgusted. The ad says they are selling rabbits but have chinchillas that are 'rare'. Now the picture in the ad shows a chinchilla that doesn't appear to be in that bad of shape. Something told me just to email and see if he could send me a couple more pictures of these chinchillas. (Something about them being the last line in an ad for rabbits concerned me) These are the pictures I got just now. I don't know if I should step in. They are an hour away (says mapquest - probably less) I'm going to show my stepdad tonight and see what he thinks. It just upset me and I need some thoughts on it. I mean..look at the picture of the baby. In the dust house..is that all urine? Has it ever been cleaned? I've sent questions asking if the female has been exposed to a male and how much they are asking for the chinchillas. Hope I get a reply soon. Ps- Jamie, I wasn't paying attention to the board I put this under..so please move it if need be. I wouldn't consider this a rescue..I just posted under the same thing my other threads have been. Thanks

The money isn't a real issue, but you're very kind to offer. If I could get him down to $100..when I'm sure they're healthy and ready to go to a new home I can possibly charge a re-homing fee to get at least some back. I don't mind putting out if it gets these chinnies to a safe place. Will let you know how it goes.

Ugh. Where are you located again, Mandy? Depending on where you are, you might be able to work with local authorities in rescuing these animals without having to pay this person anything for them (maybe instead they get a cruelty or neglect charge instead). Might be worth a phonecall to the appropriate place to know your options at least. But yes, I'd agree that these chinnies need help and am glad you are there! Thanks Mandy!

Mandy
Molpie's suggestion is a great one though I must tell you Ive tried that route several times and as long as when they walk in they see food and water ( even crap food) they will not issue an neglect charge.
Even the humane society has little knowledge of the care of these amazing animals, they wont serve or take the animals cause of plastic, dirty conditions usually.
I have a real real big problem personally with wire bottom cages, rusted or not Ive seen severe leg and toe injuries, Ive seen bumblefoot and it just bothers me that they are even sold.
I would like for you to get these chinchillas and I pledge 60 dollars towards the fee ...which I will paypal you if you would like ...anytime
thank you Mandy Jamie

I'm going to talk to my stepdad when he gets home. I'm really worried about these babies and wish the man would email me back. It sounds like a good suggestion, but I'm too worried they would go in, say they can't do anything, and then the owners would be upset and there would be no chance of the chin coming here.

Get as many photos as you can - from him or taken on your own without being conspicuous. Put your phone on video setting, and let it run when you pick them up (hold it in your hand casually as if you're waiting for a call, or whatever). This will record any conversation and questions you ask him without him knowing, and also pick up visuals for officials if you can get any. If you don't document anything, the authorities will have nothing to go on after the animals are in your care.
Yes, it's true that in some places authorities have, or take, little authority in such cases, but in some places they can and do get involved (and sometimes are quite eager to - especially if they have received some complaints previously, which you might not know about). This was why I ask where you are. Enforcement varies from place to place, as does who does the enforcing.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you molpie! My parents saw the pictures and agreed they are disgusting and agreed for me to get them as long as I pay for gas and the fee. So were a go for tomorrow as soon as he messages me back.

This guy just made a big mistake. Good news is he accepted my offer of $100. Bad news is I either have to pick them up tonight or NEXT WEEK. Why? Because he's going to be gone this week/is gone during the weeks. In a previous email he told me he was selling because he wasn't home on a regular basis. Wait..so who is taking care of these animals?!?! My parents just left..I don't know if they're willing to drive an hour out and back tonight but I'll ask as soon a I can call them . (they are looking at a house and if I call I'll get my head ripped off) I emailed back and asked about tomorrow morning maybe.. Even if it's very early. Keep your fingers crossed. I don't want the chinchillas together for another week if that baby is a boy. Mandy I am wondering if I can please communicate with your mother does she have an email? would you ask her if I can write her? I would like to thank her for all of her efforts. She seems like such a nice person and since she created you..a person who cares so much for people and animal welfare...she must be extra special. I would also like to tell her personally that I would chip in some money to help these chinchillas as well as help with Packer etc ok? Jamie

Got it. Very kind of you, Jamie. I can't wait to go pick them up and have them settle in. For irritated feet, if they should have it, I've heard mixed comments on bag balm.. Yay or neigh?

I'm off to the shelter for a few hours before we leave to pick up the chins tonight. I'm going to get info on the bunnies I'm fostering to see if they have opened up any space for maybe the brown ones to go in and get adopted while they're babies. (Hopefully before they're adults and look like giant brown wild rabbits with no eye appeal.. ) Also to get information on what I can/should do if the animals in the house/under ownership of this man are in just as bad shape as the chinchillas..I mean they should know..it's animal control. lol Will post later! Have a nice day everyone. thanks for the update Mandy poo Jamie

Wonderful work Mandy. So happy! Be safe on the roads, loads of strength to be patient and courteous with the "owner" of the chinchilla whatever you may encounter. Thanks for this! Vince
