I was contacted today by the Montgomery County Humane Society in Rockville, MD. They just got in 23 chinchillas and they don't have room for that many. They need help asap.
The chins came from a backyard breeder who brought all 26 chins in only two cages! Three chins had to be euthanized, but they say all the other chins are in good shape, no sign of fungus or other illness.
They told me there was 12 males and 14 females, but that must of been before they had to euthanize three. Many appear to be young, about 3 months or so, but of course age is not known for sure. Some are adults. Any of the females could be pregnant, so keep that in mind.
They are looking for good homes asap, so if you think you can help, please contact the humane society directly.
Their number is 240-271-0656 and they are in Rockville, MD.

I'm pretty far away from MD, but I will post this on my fb group to see if anyone in the east coast can provide a home/foster.

Jamie, I am probably one of the only people in the world that does not belong on facebook. I will give an update tomorrow as to how many chins are still looking for homes. The shelter is worried about the females they are pretty sure are pregnant. I told them that I am full, but if they can't find anyone who can take them, then I would find room somehow since I have a lot of experience with moms and kits. It would be a 6 hour drive for me, but we'll see how things go. The shelter said the chins could easily be picked up, so they were handled at some point which is good. The chins they had to euthanize was horrible. One was just laying on the bottom of the cage and lethargic. Another had his ears chewed off and there were worms on him . The other was a runt and had his ears chewed and bites. Personally I never would have euthanized the two with the ear problems, but I can understand a public shelter view point and when you are suddenly given 26 chins at once, they really had their hands full. They told me they were brought in two large guinea pig cages and there were 18 chins in one cage! Truly sickening and so heartbreaking.

I can't imagine them all being crammed in those 2 cages. I hope there are rescues in that area that can help out. Hugs & Prayers,

Oh wow this is so sad If there's anyway to get them to NC I'd be happy to help. Rockville, MD is only 6.5-7 hours from me but I doubt my truck would make the trip. I'll post it on FB and see if there's anyone that could help out.

I have an overflow room which is empty at the moment. I can take as many as they need to house. It's a day trip for me, but I'm on spring break now. Perfect timing. I'll give them a call first thing this morning.

Whimsy I mentioned your name to them yesterday, but don't think she wrote it down. I was going to tell them to contact you because I figured you most likely had some room available.
I called them today for an update, but had to leave a message and have not heard back yet.
You have experience with kits correct?

Andrea We have had lots of experience with mass surrenders. We helped out the Spotyslvania mass surrender of 23 in January of last year and take in many, many smaller groups. On average we receive 10 chins per month and adopt out just as many. We ALWAYS put females on maternity watch for 4 months from the time they arrive if they come in mixed groups and have had plenty of experience in assisting difficult births. We also have three on-call vets who are ready to assist. At this time we have close to 70 chins in our care presently and have never refused assistance where chins need help. So yes, we have experience.

All of these chins are going to private rescues at which point they will be evaluated and then adopted out. Females will be on pregnancy watch.
Thank you everyone!

You offered help to the chins I'm also trying to rescue last month and if we can arrange RR to your location we may send a couple your way. Thank you for ALL you do!!! Hugs,

That's great news that the chin community once again helped some more chins in need. This is really sad on how people thinks it's ok to do this. It really frustrates me on why people would want to breed chins and treat them like this. GRRRRRRRRRRR. Glad they are all going to loving rescues
