Also, since you said you don't have room for a cage, do you happen to have an extra cage at home? I want to make sure in case there is a small time span between when you pick them up and when I can find someone to meet you. I do have cages here if they have to stay for a day or two. No problem there. I'll spoil them rotten while they are here.

Ok, we have had one person decide to not take some chins. They'll come here for now.
So, IF Suzy can pick up the chins, we'll be bringing most of them down here, and then arranging to have everyone go where they have refuge.
Crysta, I'm messaging you.
Just so people know, I never work on just one railroad at a time. So there is no offense at all intended. I do it this way because I usually have a leg fall through on at least one of them by the time I get everything arranged.

Ok, well I'm just hitting Utah now and am finally getting reception on my phone after patchy service today. I have about 19 more hours of driving to go. If someone can let me know whether or not to expect to pick up the trio, that'd be great. Thanks.

Hi Sumiko, I'll also email you.
I have gotten the surrender forms, and right now I have to basically place a freeze on transfers and adoptions. It is virtually guaranteed that these chins have liver diseases and dental diseases. There is no mention of hay, but a very lengthy and sickening (which I hate to say) list of treats. The degus are about guaranteed to be diabetic, looking at what they eat.
Right now, I can accept transfer requests to experienced rescues that have been either open for 3+ years, chin owners/working with chins for 5+ years, and/or learning about chins for 5+ years regardless of length of ownership/care given to chins. If that makes sense. So any rescue who would like to take in these chins (as sanctuary placement for now until we can evaluate their health), must have been open for 3 or more years, OR be a chin owner for 5 or more years PLUS have knowledge about chins that is equal to 5 plus years of study.
No in-home adoptions, unless you can demonstrate extensive knowledge and commitment and have owned chins for at least 5 years with stellar references including one from your vet.
I'm very, very sorry to everyone who has applied to adopt a pair of these chins into their homes as pets.

Oh no That's awful! I can't offer any help with the chins because I've never dealt with liver issues, but if you need any help with the degus let me know. You and everyone are in my thoughts. Hugs

Oh my gosh. How horrible, after all the work put into this, that it seems all plans have to be revised with much more precise and careful placements. It's so disheartening to know animals can be so badly treated, whether it is done with any awareness or with complete ignorance. I haven't been following this thread closely for a while, but if any of the chinnies need to get to rescue in CO Springs, I might be able to help (or rather, my dad, who's coming out to CO from NE to help me after an upcoming surgery - sure thing that he's coming). Let me know if that would be helpful and I'll talk with him about shuttling some chinnies. Oh, I'm sickened by this situation! A day in the life, I guess. Sigh. Mo

Thank you Marne and Crysta (and anyone else you're working with) for offering your homes and hearts to these chinnies in need. It has been a rollercoaster ride and I am so glad the owner is finally (after many back and forth, afraid to let go moments) letting us rescue these babies and give them the love and proper nutrition/vet care they so badly need. I am so anxious to have them safe and sound and to get them started on the road to better health and happiness. God bless all of you!!!

I'll know more about them when I pick them up tonight (can't wait!!!!) We had a "surprise" birth yesterday....Amy and Beau had a baby and so I have to take extra care to ensure Amy and her baby are healthy and ok before they can be transported. I pray no other females are pregnant!

Any updates? I haven't heard anything about these chins in the last few days. Were they picked up? Are they ok?

Any updates? I haven't heard anything about these chins in the last few days. Were they picked up? Are they ok? Hi Crysta! Sorry about that. I had replied on one of Jamie's posts about it and on his FB page and forgot to post on this thread. I've been a busy bee but am thrilled that I did get them all out Saturday night. We got all but 2 of the cages (ran out of room with our truck and car) but I have been using some cages I had here also. The pan on one of the tall cages (where the trio was) disgusted us. It had a huge hole in it and the owner said she wasn't aware of it...said her husband had done the "cleaning".....obviously if it had corroded through it was rarely cleaned......argh!!! I refused to take the pan. I also left the cage Comet & Fearless had been in. I think you have the much nicer FN cages at your rescue so I know they'll be MUCH happier with you! For now I have them in mine which is all wooden shelves and much nicer. I had been worried since Comet obviously has the bad cataracts and has been a bit afraid to let me pick him up. I've been very gentle with them and will get them out for regular playtime (which I'm sure they didn't get much of in their old environment). Fearless is a little more outgoing and he looked ok as far as teeth, etc. They are sooo sweet and Fearless always cuddles Comet while they sleep. I was concerned they weren't eating enough but in the last 24 hours they've improved and are eating most of the pellets (Oxbow and I offered a little Mazuri too just to ensure they eat something of high quality.....they were on cheap Walmart rabbit food as of late). They now have purified water (no more tap water as their old owner gave them) and they get lots of fresh hay. I had to remove the terrible wheels from both degu's cages. They were too small and had spokes/cross bars. Both degus had the tips of their tails injured due to the wheels! You now see the tail without the fur/tuft on the end. The trio of boys are doing well (I hope they are all boys.....I'm not 100% sure on Jazz. Have to do another inspection as it was not obvious like with the other boys). Jazz and Fawkes are very friendly and Rebel is coming around slowly. They love the pellets and hay. I'm watching Raisinette (she is a cuddle bug) as she felt a bit big in the middle and she could potentially be pregnant. She and Mickey are both fine and eating well. Mickey is very chatty when I go near him. LOL! Both Roo and Cookie have been pretty quiet but are eating and slowly adjusting. They all seem much happier in the new environment (even though I don't have ideal cages for them all yet or fleece for everyone.....but they'll have it soon enough). Poor Beau is missing a good portion of his front paw. I haven't heard back from the owner to see if he was ever taken to a vet. I doubt it.....I am going to see if my exotics vet will give me a lower price to examine the rescue chins. I'd like Beau seen with his paw issue and sometimes watering eye. He otherwise seems fine and is eating and is very friendly. Amy is a wonderful mom to her week old baby boy. He is gaining weight every day. I believe his former owner said he was around 48 grams at birth. Now he's almost 70. I moved Amy and her baby to a one level cage. I'd watched in horror as she'd had the family in a tall cage with the strong chance the baby could fall and get hurt. He did fall from one of the lower levels while I was trying to get her to give them all up (she was hesitating up until the end.....she didn't want to give up the baby but I convinced her as she clearly had no money to give them the care they desperately deserve and need). Poor Beau could also have gotten hurt with high levels as he only has 3 legs now. There are 2 smooth wheels that could be usable. The water bottles they had are not the best so I've been buying new ones as I can afford to. Thank goodness I get paid tomorrow! We're fostering them until the baby is old enough to handle the transportation. I know you really want to care for Comet & Fearless and I can say they are very sweet and you will adore them like I already do! Maybe Cookie can get reintroduced so the 3 older boys can be together. I'm not sure. I think Cookie had some minor fur chewing too so maybe they were stressed being all together before.....hard to say. If you have questions don't hesitate to let me know. I'm glad to keep you posted anytime. Hugs,

Thank you for the update. I don't mind waiting a bit if need be. It's going to take me a bit to work everything out on the railroad and with taking time off work anyway. I'm just glad they are in good hands.

I just wanted to randomly post and say, the Degus could have also had their tails pulled off. It's a defense mechanism. If they are grabbed by their tails, they will shed it and get away. :-) One of my girls lost her tail when she was little. :-)

I know their former owner knew at least not to pick them up that way (just wish she'd known about the wheels). I'd love to hear more about your experience with degus! Not many people have had them and I'd enjoy hearing how they are as pets and any tips on caring for them.

Quick Update.... I am still fostering the 12 chins and 2 degus and all are doing well. I was able to get 6 chins to the vet for check ups (Beau, Amy, their baby boy who's now almost 6 weeks old, Raisinette, Comet, and Fearless) and they're all okay except as I suspected, Raisinette is pregnant. Beau had a URI and that is what caused his eye drainage and slight nasal drainage. He's been on antibiotics for 1 1/2 weeks now and is doing better. Comet is blind or nearly blind due to the severe cataracts and he has a heart murmer (but the vet said this often won't cause any problem). He is amazing how well he gets around and knows where his food dish is and water bottle. Jinna at Apple Wood rescue in Colorado will be taking in the two degus later this month. Still looking for RR to get Comet and Fearless to Crysta in Florida. Waiting to make final arrangements with Marne for the others. Wan in Minnesota is still offering to help too if we need it. Hopefully these babies can get to their more comfortable future homes soon. I love them all so it's hard to say goodbye, but I know I'll get updates on how they're doing and they'll be well loved and cared for.

Jean, will you still be willing to send a donation package for these chins? To Suzy, while I figure out in my schedule when we can transfer them over here. She'd get the package to help the chins out, it wouldn't come here.

Thank you Marne for getting me in touch with Tara for the donation of some hammocks! These guys have never experienced fleece before and after all these years on wire they deserve some pampering.
