Basically, the way to start a rescue is to have an established reputation. One can become a home based shelter affiliate, or do the paperwork to establish 501 c3 status. To "do it right" requires the partnership with legal mandates. Check out your local animal control office for those requirements. Many rescues begin as people with soft hearts who want to help. Although there are others who have less than altruistic motivations and "rescue" for hoarding or breeding purposes...or worse. In any event, starting a shelter can be fairly easy. Maintaining it is the hard part. You WILL come across people who want to destroy your reputation. If your operation is a bad one, this could be a good thing for the animals. Also, it takes lots of $$ to run a rescue. Depending on the number of animals you take in, it could be a full time job. We are fortunate in that my children and I work together to run the rescue as what started as a home school project. We have all the time in the world to devote to running the rescue and it's been part of our daily chores for a good long time now. However, answering all the emails and phone calls keeps me busy during the times when we're not giving direct care to the chins.

We had 75 lbs of chin food donated to us but since we're rats, we can't use it. We have a 50 lb bag of Oxbow and a 25 lb bag of Kaytee Fortidiet. We are in Philadelphia, PA, if you know of any reputable rescues for chins that can use it, please let me know. We cannot deliver or ship for financial reasons.

Mainline Rescue will take in chinchillas outside Philadelphia - they don't have many, or often, but they are willing and able.

i have a chinchilla I am looking to rehome. she is the sweetest girl but she deserves more time to be played with than I can currently give her. I'm hoping to find someone familiar with chinchillas because I want her to find her forever home. Please email me for pictures or more information. maramogle415@gmail.com
