So I went to a friends house and she said she had chinchillas. She showed them to me and the conditions they were in were really sad. She told me I could have them if I wanted them but unfortunately I live at home and my parents wont allow them in the house. I don't know anything about chinchillas:( Does anyone know of a rescue here in Utah that would take them? I'm going bring them home tomorrow but I need to find them a good permanent home.

Kristi, its good that you care and are making the first move I live in the Utah valley and there are no rescues here except the humane society at 4500 and they have only a small amount of knowledge about chinnies ( I volunteered there for 7 months) There are some in Colorado and California and we can perhaps set up a chinchilla railroad ( this is where someone drives for how many miles they can and then someone else takes them from there till they find a destination that has been pre set up Unfortunately chinchillas all over are lonely , abused, in horrible conditions, sometimes its really amazing how people don't care. I wish I could take them, but I have 17 pets ... no more for me Jamie

Thanks everyone, Mo, I have them at my house now but I cant keep them:( There are two of them one female and one male. The female is 11 and the male is 2. The older one is very friendly but the young one wont come near me. He is warming up to me though. I was hanging a tube hammock in the females cage and he stuck his nose in her cage and tried to pull it into his cage. It was so cute that I gave it to him and he was sleeping in it when I woke up.

awww. I can just see that.
I'm really curious... having an 11 year old female and a 2 year old male - 2 separate cages - sounds like an unusual situation to me - do you know the story behind these two?
Also... interested to know whatever you can tell me about these two... How this person got them, why, how long she had them, etc.? Have they ever seen a vet? How is their weight? How are their teeth? Are they eating and pooping well? How's their fur?
Most importantly... I know these two are in separate cages - have they always been? Are they bonded with each other? Is there a possibility of pregnancy?

The lady that gave them to me said that the older one is the grandma of the younger one. Also she said they did have one baby together but the mom wouldn't take care of it. When I went to pick them up they were in the same cage but she said she just did that so that I could transport them easily. I know not to bright! So there is a possibility that she is pregnant but I really hope not. They have never seen a vet. Her daughter got the grandma and a male years ago and they bred them (thats where the little one came from) but her daughter went to college and they just got neglected. I don't know what bonded is but they are very close. When I take one out of its cage the other comes running over like its worried. They seem to be in good health. They are definitely eating a lot. Their fur and poop looks good. I dont know how to check their teeth but I bought them this calcium chew for chinchillas and they don't seem to have trouble chewing them. The reason I was worried about them is because the lady had them in a greenhouse type thing with a fan on them. But it was really hot in that greenhouse. There cages were really disgusting and small too:( My avatar is the older one but the younger one looks just like her only a little smaller.

Kristi Im so glad you've joined us and I find it incredible that with all the info the last 15 or more years that people do things like keep them in greenhouses with a fan It tears at my heart that human beings that at one time decide to take care of and bring an animal into their house can just let them "rot" like they are not living. I worked at the Humane Society and got a real education there. Once a man in a brand new SUV, ( stickers still on the window) came by and dropped his dog off in the street with me standing there. His words were , I am too busy to take care of him I know YOU all will do a better job He dropped a 5 year old dog off and drove away like he just left a newspaper on someones front door stop. He didnt know that a million animals are euthanized by the humane society a year that they live on donated food, in cement pens, waiting for someone to care. I had to quit that place, though there were some triumphs, seeing the need, the needy day in and day out was too much. You probably wont like this but in the short time we have gotten to communicate with you YOU ...sound like the perfect loving caring person for those chinchillas you would be amazing. Jamie

Jamie, I have never dared work at the humane society. I'm glad people like you have the courage to do so. Its insane how irresponsible people can be! I understand you might not be able to take care of an animal anymore but its your responsibility to find them a good home and as a last resort take them to the humane society. I would love to keep the chins! I'm trying to get my parents to warm up to the idea. Also I think im allergic to the dust bath I had an asthma attack last time they used it. Is there another material they can use? maybe something less fine?

Kristi well the good thing is chinchillas dont have dander so it's tough to be allergic to them however, more so than not people are alergic to Timothy Hay I know quite a few people who wear one of those masks ( like when you go into a hospital or where it if you have a cold) when feeding but yes there is a dust that is non allergenic Look towards the bottom of this page and you'll see the dust www.whimsys-menagerie.com/foodhealth.htmYou may be surprised by how many "parents" disapprove of the idea that's until you get them one on one with the chinnies, or let them hold one, we have all sorts of tricks to soften mom and dads heart Cool Jamie

As for a non-allergic dust, I suggest you try Sweet PDZ (you can buy it at Tractor Supply in the horse isle). It's mostly used as a horse stall deodorizer. It comes in a granular (like sand) and in powder (like Blue Cloud). I've used both (one of my boys gets eye infections from Blue Cloud and Blue Sparkle so he uses Sweet PDZ, however, I personally prefer the powder. You might prefer the granular, you'll have to try both and see.
