I have no idea if this should go here since it has something to do with rescuing, or if it should go somewhere else altogether. If it's in the wrong spot please feel free to move it. I just needed somewhere to vent before I explode.
When I left work tonight at 10pm I checked my phone and I have a voice mail that came through at 6:38pm. I listen to the voice mail and this was the exact message word for word:
"Hello, this is Tiffany. I got your card from the Pet Supermarket up the street. I have 18 hamsters I need a new home for. I tried to bring them to 3 different pet stores and none would take them. At the last store a boy there gave me your card so I am now calling you. I can't handle them. They just keep breeding and breeding. If you don't call me back in 10 minutes I will let them go in the woods"
Freaking out I called her back praying she had at least a small heart and still had them. She answered the phone and I started off telling her I was at work and didn't get the message until now. Before I could say another word she said, "Oh, your the lady calling about the hamsters, right? Well, no worries, they have been disposed of". I said" Disposed of?!". She said "yeah, you took too long so I just threw them out the back door. I know one is already dead because I saw a cat walking away him in his mouth".
She then rambled on about something or other and hung up. I couldn't say anything as I was holding back tears. I feel so horrible for these animals. *%&^&*^R*E&%^#*)#&%$!!!!!!
I just had to vent. I had the worst night tonight at work and this just took it even farther.
*sigh*
*bangs head against desk*

I am thrilled that you came here to vent ..Ive been getting so much mail from new Christmas chinchilla moms and dads from 9 years old to adults ...that Im about to blow. Crysta ... can we find where this person is? If we cant save the hamsters maybe we can save the caller I went to school with a guy who threw his cats in the washing machine ..running of course He ended up later in life in jail for being a serial killer maybe we cant save her or the animals but its perhaps worth a try I know that you must, and our other rescuers must go through absolute hell, cause I'm not in a physical rescue and the letters and communications I get can make me cry, make me sick, made me mad. It takes everything I have not to let some people have it ...and good. we are here for YOU... I just wish we could be for those innocent animals damn damn damn hugs Jamie

Crysta, I know this reply is really late, but is there any way you can get her address.
There is a good chance the hamsters will stay close by not knowing how to survive outside. I'm sure with so many of them, some survived. She may allow you to look around her place and see if you can find any of them.
Even if you are able to save a couple, it will be worth the effort.
I am so sorry your year had to end like this. This is truly animal cruelty.

I'm so sorry. I feel for you. I still cry about a nameless little chin that was suffering horrible cruelty. We were just leaving out the door to go pick him up from someone who took him away from his abusive "owner", and they called to tell us THEY GAVE HIM BACK. He was two years old and BLIND from the crap food they were giving him, when they were giving it. Poor chinnie, omg. And the one in Nicholasville the pizza lady tried to save when delivering pizza to the family. They DIDN'T KNOW WHAT SHE WAS. They had her in a tiny little BIRD CAGE and they were feeding her CAT FOOD! They called her all kinds of swear words and complained that she was mean and bit them. They would with hold food whenever she bit! The woman came to us (the delivery woman) later, crying, because she offered to take the chin off their hands, and they pulled a GUN on her!
Nightmares. I seriously get nightmares from some of the things I am told.
Those poor hamsters, I can't imagine their terror. I am so sorry. It wasn't your fault, no one made this girl be so heartless and cruel, she did it of her own volition. You need to know that. Even if you find where she is and no hamsters are left, it's not your fault. You do your best, you help who you can. I know it sounds empty and I know there are always the ones you can't save that haunt you, but for the ones that you do save, you make a world of difference.

you know the more we reach out the more people we can stop from doing these things
I was just on "the other forum" , at the moment no one is signed on unfortunately somebody wrote about how their new male and female are fighting in a cage TOGETHER that the nose was bitten, and fur was pulled out
I have been off there for so long I dont remember where the posts are about introducing chinchillas
I told this person that someone would follow up ... and to get that male and female away from each other NOW I also mentioned to look for abrasions
WHY WHY WHY doesnt anyone tell these people with chinchillas for the first time how to possibly socialize them, that there is a chance they wont get along, that they cant or shouldnt mix males and females
its like animal cruelty for a friend, a pet store, a breeder, even a shelter not to tell people about the dangers.
Gosh ...I wish I could help the person on the other forum more I just had to leave it to them.
hugs Jamie
(if any of you are members on both here and there ..please go over there and see if you can help this person before one of this persons chinchillas is ripped to shreds, mamed, or worse.
Thank you

All I have is a phone #. I did a reverse look up on it when I got home and it was a cell so there is no way to track it. When she first answered the phone and I was rambling about how I was at work, and I can come over NOW and pick them up, I specifically asked her where she was located. That's when she cut me off saying there was no need because they were already gone.
Unfortunately in this situation, without knowing anything about her other than a cell, I have no way to find her.

She might tell you to go to H , or tell you its not your business or she might say...well you can come over you never know if you want to PM me the number...heck Ill call her. Its gonna be hard not to slam her and I wont hugs jamie

In my area, at least, Petco and Petsmart separate their male and female hamsters. I don't know if this practice has been extended elsewhere. I do find that some of the smaller, independent pet shops just place them together. We recently went to a small pet shop to find a Syrian teddy bear hamster. We called, and they had them. When we got there, I found that males and females were mixed. I commented on this and the salesperson told me their age. Chances were good that they didn't breed. I took the chance, hoping that they there was no problem. At that point, the hamster was too upset for me to check if I had a male or female. I had visions of 12 plus hamster tanks in my house. Luckily, there were no babies. Many times, these shops sell hamsters that are already pregnant. If they have babies in the shop, then they just sell them. If they sell a pregnant hamster to an unsuspecting person, then things like this happen. It sounded as if she knew that they were male and female and put them together anyway. The point is that we should not only look at large pet shops such as Petco and Petsmart, but those smaller places that may listen. Ann

Ann do you remember when I woke up on my birthday to find Lilly (my mouse) had 13 pinkies...which I thought were maggots?
LOL that was some experience by the time it was over we had over 50 mice running around my house unfortunately after I woke up with a dead mouse in my hand and one in my underwear I had to take action... if you recall I found"waldo" the(almost pet) field mouse and his buddies impregnate my pet mice plus anyone else "waldo" decided to be with
but the babies that came from the petsmart mouse were accepted back at my Petsmart and I made them promise they wouldn't let them die, or kill them and sure enough 2 of the sales-people adopted the mice.
I dont know much about hamsters as you know but sure glad that you had a good situation

I do remember. Wow, was that a situation! Many, many years ago, I did unknowingly take home a pregnant hamster. When I went into her cage one day, I saw the babies. Unfortunately, she was so close to having the babies when I took her home, the stress of the move caused her to eat her babies. It was a horrible experience for all. We were both lucky about the pinkies and my Syrian. I hope that pet shops will be more respnsible. Ann

Jamie, I actually called her this morning on my way to work before I even read that here. I got off at 12:30pm and still haven't gotten a response back. I think she is ignoring my calls. I would be out there in a heartbeat to catch as many as I could if she would just call me back. *sigh*

Crysta you did all that you can. If she doesn't call you back, it is on her what she did to those poor animals. At least you tried to get in touch with her again.

I am so, so sorry Crysta. For this hamsters and also, that such a person first called you, involved you in this story just to tell you that crap then at the end!! You know - maybe it would help, if you give this number to Jamie. If in a call, or on an answering machine or as text message - but maybe it would help, when HE would tell that girl who he is, what we think at that she AT LEAST could have the heart to tell you, where she lives to look for the hamsters!!
Those people make me sick!! I just hope, that maybe some better humans will find some of the hamster by chance!
Hugs Ilka

Poor hamsters - stupid, stupid ignorant woman - was it genuine? Or do you think it may have just been malicious? (You know, "I'm going to wind up someone who I know loves animals, I'll pretend I have some that need rehoming...")
I'm just watching Sydnee as I write this (my hamster) - he's so loving, so intelligent and, oh what stupid, stupid woman.
AAAARRRGGGGHHHHHH, go do your best CIA! xxxxxxxx

For sick people like this, you have to be really passive. Act innocent so they won't think they will get into trouble, but YOU are willing to do the work and just want to look outside their home to see if any hamsters survived.
If they think you want to inspect their home or yell at them or report them, you will never get the address.
You have to have an attitude of; what the heck, why not let me look to try to find survivors, I won't even bother you.
The whole situation is very, very sad.
