We got a girl in who Bonnie has named Honey (she is very good at naming chins, she gave Bentley his name, and he adores it). I call her Honeysuckle "for short". lol Anyway. She came from Arkansas. She was rescued by a young lady, from people who were burning her with cigarettes. She couldn't find a vet who had ever seen chins, let alone treated them, so she contacted me. Honey was drooling profusely, and her teeth were white. I found out she survived 3 days of wormer, and knew she was a fighter, surviving everything she survived, and Kjell said she should come here. We worked for a month to get her to Dallas, and then our friend had her 10 days and drove her down to us. She saw the vet on Monday. Her lower jaw is severely malformed, I said "it feels as though it were broken in a few places" and the vet agreed that yes, it did. We think she did suffer from a broken jaw. Her mouth can't close properly, and that is why she is drooling. Because of her jaw, her teeth are in a wave, they meet at different parts, like if the wave started at her nose and ended under her eye? So some of her bottom teeth are longer and their mate teeth are shorter, and vice versa, to accommodate her jaw. But, because she has gotten hay, good pellets and toys to chew since arriving to Dallas, she only has minor tooth points. She'd never had hay or toys before she came to our friend in Dallas. The vet thinks Honey has a great prognosis now that she's safe, and that her dental issues will be resolved with our diet. Honey is a very sweet girl, very timid, though she had no qualms spraying me. LOL! I love when they feel safe enough to do that. She got me at the vet's, which was understandable. And they all squealed because they'd never seen a chin spray before. lol But she got me, though once she realized we weren't going to hurt her, she calmed right down and sat very still for her x-rays and cooperated with everything else. They were bathing her in water (apparently no dust, ever), so she is one big mat. We are giving her non-stop dust (we have a humidifier in our room) to loosen the mats, and after a month we'll start working them out. If they were causing her trouble, interfering with her movements or whatever, we'd have already been trying to pull them out. Here's Honey! You can see how small she is in the pictures below. These are from my friend, the day Honey arrived to them. Honey is in a tiny cage, it's a rat cage, but it looks bigger than it is because she is so small. She had at least one baby! Honey is in our room now, on my bedside table, and I added a fleece house to her cage. Once she settles, we'll move her into a bigger cage.

Poor Honey!
Who could do something like that, to such a sweet animal? Glad she is with you, now.

I'm sorry, Jamie, I have no idea who it was. I had to get Honey out of there and the young lady who surrendered her doesn't answer my emails now. If I ever do find out, I will let you know. It literally makes me sick, to think of what she has gone through. It's hard to explain, but I can feel it when I pick her up. I'm relieved she is here. I love her so much, and we are doing everything we can to help her feel safe and to recover. And of course she is a resident in our sanctuary, so she is safe for life. I paired her with Mei-Mei and Stevie (meaning, I asked them to be her special friends--they're never together, but they're in the same room and they can visit across it) and that has helped somewhat. I've had that twice where I've wanted to press charges, with Honey and then with the other chins, I didn't have the name of the man. He was starving them and making them fight for tiny bits of food. One of the chins died, another was hospitalized for 3 days in an animal ER, and they all came in under 500 grams. They're all healthy now (finally) and mostly recovered, but I'm afraid to adopt them out because of how much damage it did to them psychologically, plus the seizures the girls will still occasionally have. That was 2 years ago and I still have nightmares, and I want to hunt that monster down and...well, I can't really finish that sentence here.

Ugh! PEOPLE MAKE ME SO MAD! I'm so happy, though that Honey is with you! At least I know she will be safe and happy. I agree, she looks like one big mat! Her fur does not look good. You can easily tell she hasn't been bathed and cared for right. BURNING HER WITH CIGARETTES?! I'm sorry, Marne, but I'm so mad right now I don't think I should comment about that. I don't want the Admins to have to edit my angry post. Take good care of her.

There's a long string of words that I'm not allowed to type here about the situation. I will never understand how people can be so cruel to something so tiny and innocent. I really hope that girl comes to her senses and gives you a name. I could never live with the guilt if I protected someone that vile and disgusting. I've called authorities before on neighbours that weren't caring for their animals, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I know they say "eye for an eye and the whole world would be blind", but I truly believe that sick people who abuse and torture animals and humans alike need to be shown what it's like. So mad! I'm really glad you got the pretty little girl She couldn't be in better hands.

I'm just going to compeltely skip what I think of the owners and go for the chinchilla: I think she is adorable! Even matted up. And she looks intelligent and like she now knows she's safe for good. Do you have any idea how old she is? Just curious. I can't even begin to say how happy I am that she is with you!....I keep looking at her face and she reminds me of my "baby" boy Tuvok and I don't even want to think about what would happen if someone dared to do that to him. Take good care of this little one (I know you will) she's special(and not just because she reminds me of Tuvok lol).

I actually don't think that we staff would be able to correct any bad word you could write here about this situation, since we probably would just add some more at least in mind!!!
I'm in tears here, although I saw one of this pics I guess already on Facebook - but this story, and your last post Marne - that somebody let Chins FIGHT about food intentionally - that gave me the rest!! I could vomit!
I am just so, so, so, so glad Honey is with you now!!! And her eyes tell me, that she is a smart little thing, that is still not dissapointed enough about humans to not LOOK at you and wait how YOU are. God, she deserves it so much to experience all the love and care you will give her!!! If I would be nearer I guess you would have a volunteer JUST for her and to let her feel better!!! Poor little thing! But she's such a fighter - her second name should be Xena or Athene or so!!
Everything okay now little, brave Honey!! You're at a good place now and we all pray for you and send you love and light for your now new beginning life!!!
Hugs Ilka

Thank you everyone. I told her last night that she has so many people who love her now, and she smiled. She takes treats/medicine from us, sticks, the little bagel bites, but she is skittish (of course). I'm going to move her to a bigger cage tonight, but not too big so that she'll feel in control of herself and her surroundings, still. Sarah: I'm not sure how old she is, I can't tell at the moment because of her fur. I know that sounds odd, but I usually can guess within a year by watching how they move around the cage and how they sit and hold their heads (only in person, though). Her fur, though, since it's matted it obscures how she moves. I would say 4-6, but I'm not very comfortable with that guess. The person who surrendered her didn't know her age. Thank you Ilka! Her name was Xena, but she didn't know it, so we thought we should rename her so she'd have a clear cut from her past. I thought it was a great name, though. We were going to keep it, but my friend said she gave no response at all whenever she heard "Xena", so we thought it'd be best to change it. We gave her the Jewish names Adira-Eliana, which mean "noble" and "powerful" and "my god has answered my prayers." I couldn't decide and half the people liked Adira and the other half Eliana. lol I think they both suit her well, though! And I hope one day she will realize how beautiful and strong she is, and amazing and loved. Thank you for loving these chins, and for sending so much love and light their ways. It makes a huge difference in their lives. I can't explain how it changes their postures, when I tell them how much you all love them, and how much you are rooting for them and hope they will feel better. But I can tell you, they stand a little taller and smile a little bigger, whenever I do. They always say "me?" and I say "of course you. You're wonderful just as you are."

Thank you very much Jamie, Marne and John!! If I just would know it always myself, when I write something extraordinary! Marne, I found it so weird that her name WAS in fact Xena! But I agree, that she needs a new start, also with name and Honey fits perfect to her cute, smart face!! I just know, that you give usually more then one name, so I came to a "fighter" name in addition *lol* Keep telling them how special they are for all of us! I loved to read about their reaction! Hugs Ilka

I wish I lived closer to some of these great rescues. I've looked around here, but I can't seem to find any that deal with chins specifically, and I didn't see any at the closest regular shelter. I bet she'll be a total darling

We've upgraded Honey to a slightly bigger cage (it's 1 foot longer and the same height and depth) to see how she would do, and she is doing marvellously! Here she is, modeling her new cage: We have to move her up slowly because she has been in a tiny cage her entire life. We don't know how she will handle a full one-level FN; we have had some chins do very badly moving them straight into bigger cages. So this way, she retains a feeling of control over herself and her space. And here Honey is saying "hello!" after having a very long bath: She has a great view of the tv, and she is on my side of the bed, in our room. Honey comes out to greet me every time I walk into the room and she eagerly takes her calcium tablets and medicine. I think she's feeling a lot better already.

Marne
I will PM you ...Im out of town
do you do "fostering" meaning if I wanted to supply most or all of the needs of Honey but Im not able to adopt.. ( I have all boys here as you know) can I do that???
I am asking in public as a question as ..for you...and ALL our rescues ..this might be a good way to help perhaps some of our members like me who are full up could maybe help in this way.
You know ...kinda like the child I used to sponsor in Africa I sent things, paid for things and I got a picture often, a report of how things were going and eventually even got a personal letter
this was some time ago...but I remember it was a beautiful thing
hugs jamie

Awww - that would be actually a nice idea to offer - how do you call it "sponsorship" or "godparenthood" for Chinnies at a regular basis in the rescues! And this pics are wesome Marne!!! Honey looks already so much more happy!!! I guess she knows, that she is at a safe place now! Good job! Ilka
